When I first started freelancing, I scoured hundreds of freelance writing jobs trying to see what kind of projects I could work on.
I wanted to know what exactly “freelancing writing” meant and what kind of content and words it covered. As I burrowed deeper into my research, I realised that there are tons of different types of writing that freelancers get paid to create – and some pay better than others.
The key is to choose freelance writing jobs that you enjoy, are good at, and that pay well.
The first two are pretty easy to figure out (you know yourself better than anyone else, after all), but it’s the latter that’s a bit more tricky to discover.
So, what kind of freelance writing jobs pay well and are worth the effort? More importantly, what are the kinds of freelance writing jobs you can build your business around?
The Different Types of Freelance Writing Jobs
1. Blog Posts and Articles
Blog writing (also known as content writing in some circles) can be really lucrative. Blogs are an essential part of the sales cycle, so every brand that sells a product needs a blog. As a result, there are literally millions of potential clients out there that need your talent and skills.
This is exactly what I do for my clients.
I create long-form blog posts (1,500+ words) that are geared towards conversion. This means my services are very valuable for clients because they generate more sales – and this means that I can charge a very good price for them.
Potential price range for blog posts and articles: $100-$1,000 per post depending on length, purpose, and industry
2. Case Studies
Case studies showcase customer stories and provide proof that a brand’s product works. This makes them an incredibly valuable form of content and they are therefore one of the most lucrative types of freelance writing jobs.
Look on most sites these days (particularly B2B sites and tech-related sites) and you’ll find an entire section dedicated to case studies. There’s a specific formula that case studies follow which makes them fairly structured and easy to churn out:
- Outlining the problem the client had
- The solution that was put in place
- The results that were generated
I’ve written my fair share of case studies for clients and it’s actually really fun. You have the opportunity to get to know a brand’s customers better, which means that if you’re doing other kinds of freelance writing jobs for them you are in a better position to do so.

3. Website Copy
Copywriting is one of the most popular freelance writing jobs. It essentially involves writing the content for web pages such as “home” pages, “about us” pages, and “services” pages.
The great thing about website copywriting is there are millions of websites, all of which need content. It’s a no-brainer. Without a website these brands would struggle to get customers, which means it’s a vital part of running a business.
And, if you’re able to weave words in a way that increases conversions, you’re going to be able to charge a pretty penny for your services.
Potential price range for website copywriting: $300+ per web page
4. Product Descriptions
Every brand that sells a product needs words to explain their product to potential customers. Hence the need for product descriptions.
Think about it: if you’re on Amazon choosing between a product sold by two competitors and one product description is more compelling than the other – you’re going to go for that one, right?
Good product descriptions increase sales and give brands a competitive edge, which means you’re able to charge handsomely for your services.

5. Ebooks
There are a lot of crappy freelance writing jobs out there that ask writers to create a 50,000 word ebook for $200. Urgh.
On the flipside, there are also a ton of brands out there that are looking for high quality ebooks as a lead generation asset and are willing to pay for the privilege.
Ebook writing means you’re able to work on one project for an extended period of time and really get stuck into a topic. And, if you write enough ebooks in an industry, you quickly become the go-to expert and can demand a higher rate.
There are two different kinds of ebooks that have different pay potentials:
- Free ebooks that are used as downloadable lead magnets
- Paid-for ebooks that are sold and used to make money
Potential price range for ebooks: $1,500-$100,000 depending on the type of ebook, the length, the amount of research involved, and whether the ebook is going to be sold or available for free
6. Whitepapers
Whitepapers are a valuable tool for companies that want to showcase their value to their clients. They bring together stats, facts, and key industry information to position themselves as a much-needed solution.
Whitepapers are one of the best-paying freelance writing jobs out there, but they’re less in demand than some of the other types of content listed here.
However, if you can find a niche where they’re in demand (this might be the finance industry, the B2B sector, or the advanced tech landscape), you can make a very good living.
The reason they’re so well-paid is because they are often used at the most pivotal point in the sales funnel. Having a good-quality whitepaper can elevate a brand to the top of their industry and showcase their expert status, which means more customers and more visibility.
Potential price range for whitepapers: $500-$3,000+
7. Video Scripts
More and more brands are turning to video to explain their products and reach new customers. As a result, video scripts are in high demand (I’ve written at least 10 video scripts for clients this year and it’s not even my specialty).
Freelance writing jobs like these are often ongoing because brands want to create several videos over a period of time to keep momentum going. Brands might also need videos for their service pages, home page, and product pages, which has been proven to boost conversions.
If you’re able to demonstrate that the video scripts you create are conversion-powered and get good results, you’ll be able to charge very well.

9. Email Campaigns
Email campaigns are a behind-the-scenes way brands connect with their customers. This makes them an incredibly powerful way to boost sales and therefore safely puts them in the “well-paid freelance writing jobs” category.
Campaigns might include a simple welcome sequence, a launch sequence, or one-off newsletters that go out every week.
Getting good at creating short, snappy emails that are engaging and get a good number of opens and click throughs means you can demand a higher rate and build a solid, in-demand business (because every company should be communicating with their audience via email).
Potential price range for email campaigns: $200-$2,000+ depending on the number of emails and the type of campaign
Find Freelance Writing Jobs You Love
The key is to choose one or two freelance writing jobs that you think you’d enjoy and would be good at and give them a test run.
It takes a bit of trial and error to figure out what works for you, but once you find the sweet spot you quickly become known for writing that type of content. As a result, you can charge more and build a solid business that has a consistent flow of clients.
